KNOWLEDGE AND PREVENTIVE PRACTICES REGARDING SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN JAÉN

The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of knowledge and preventive practices regarding STIs among university students in Jaén during 2023. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted involving 260 university students of both sexes, aged over 17, selected through non-probability sampling. Data collection was carried out using a 20-question multiple-choice questionnaire, previously validated by expert judgment. Data were analyzed using Minitab 19 statistical software, and the Chi-square test was applied. Of the total participants, 55.4% were male, and 70.4% were aged between 17 and 21. Regarding STIs, 61.2% demonstrated an intermediate level of knowledge, while 11.2% showed a low level. Additionally, 89.6% exhibited an intermediate level of preventive practices. A statistically significant association was identified between gender and preventive practices (p = 0.005). In conclusion, university students demonstrate a moderate level of knowledge and preventive practices regarding STIs, highlighting the need to strengthen sex education strategies within the university setting.
